SmithBuilt Heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate

We have just looked at 5 of the top heavy duty dog crates that can be found on Amazon (These individual reviews can be found linked below each mini review here.)  While there are some differences in features and customer reviews between the 5, we know you want to find the perfect one to fit your family and your pet. First, let’s look at a two tables, one will rate the 5 crates based on actual customer reviews from Amazon, and the other will rate them by price.

#5: SmithBuilt Heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate Kennel – 3.9 / 5 Stars

SmithBuilt Heavy Duty Dog Cage CrateComing in fifth is our crate by SmithBuilt. (Keep in mind that this is not a bad crate – simply the bottom of the top 5 crates on Amazon.) This crate comes in three different sizes to accommodate different types of dogs. It comes in 36”, 42” and 48”. Coming in two colors (black and silver), these crates are made from commercial quality materials. Like a few of the others, this crate has two doors. One door is on the side, while one door is on the top. The floor grate and tray are both rust and corrosion resistant, which is great for older pets or new puppies who can’t quite control themselves. This crate also comes with wheels, two of which lock to restrict movement. If you’re not trying to spend a fortune but want a solid product, backed with good reviews from over 700 customers, this is the perfect heavy duty crate for you.

#4: Sliverylake Heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate Kenel with Tray – 4.3 / 5 Stars

Sliverylake Heavy Duty Dog Cage CrateThis crate comes in 4 colors – golden, black, silver, and bronze. So you can pretty much guarantee you will be able to match it to your home decor, if that’s your thing. This crate also comes in a few different sizes – those being a 37”, 42”, and 48”. The body of the crate is made with heavy duty steel wire and the frame is made up of metal square tubing. Like #5, it has four wheels, two of which lock to restrict movement unless wanted. Also like #5, it also two doors. The door in the top of the crate (this being the entire crate top) is hinged and lifts up, similar to how a coffee table that has storage space inside works. It also features a removable grate as well as tray that are easily removed in case of accidents for cleaning. Nearly identical to #5, this crate has a higher star rating, although it is calculated by a far smaller amount of customers. There is also only a few dollars price difference. Between the two – you would really only be choosing between color and possibly the door or full top opening. Either way – this crate from Sliverylake is a great choice!

#3: Walcut Heavy Duty Foldable Strong Metal Pet Dog Cage Crate Cannel Playpen w/Wheels 4.5/5 Stars

Walcut Heavy Duty Fodable Strong Metal Pet Dog Cage Crate ReviewMeeting us in the middle at number three is this heavy duty crate from Walcut. Sticking with our theme, this crate also comes in a multitude of colors. This crate has the options of black, silver, and gold. Like its competitors, this crate also comes in 37”, 42”, and 48” sizes. This crate is specified for dogs weighing only 176 pounds or less. With its heavy duty steel frame, it’s much like its competitors in #4 and #5. It is also equipped with four wheels, two which, of course, lock. The website says that it fold down easily, and you can take it anywhere, which is probably true. But at 92.4 pounds, it will not be easily moved by some. Like the other before, there is a removable tray and grate that can be easily cleaned and replaced by sliding them back in. There are also two doors. One is on the side, and one on top. The top door on this one, like the others, is the entire top of the crate rather than a door in the top of the crate. With not very many reviews, only 15 at this time, it’s a great crate at a 4.5 star rating, but time will tell how it lives up to more reviewers standards. In any case, this is going to be a great middle of the road crate – great quality and great price.

#2: ProSelect Empire Dog Cage 4.7/5 Stars

ProSelect Empire Dog CageJumping in at number two, and jumping up about two hundred dollars, is the Empire Dog Cage from ProSelect. This crate comes in two sizes, medium and large. It also comes in only one color, black. This virtually indestructible crate is great for those more powerful dogs who have chewed their way through most other kennels. They even claim to be “quite possibly the world’s strongest dog crates. It’s easy to see how this crate got to be #2 on the list! The reinforced steel is even rust resistant. Like the others, this crate also has a removable grate and tray for easy mess clean ups, as well as four wheels that can be locked, although these wheels can be fully removed!

Out of just over 500 reviews at this time, a full 92% of those reviews are four and five stars! 82% of them are 5 star while another 10% are 4 star review ratings. One thing this crate does not have that the last three on our list have had is a top door. This crate only has the single door in the side of the crate. This crate, after being assembled, does not collapse for easy transportation. While the item claims to be collapsible in the section that compares similar crates side by side, it was discovered while reading through the comments that this was in fact not true.  Once you put this crate together, it’s a done deal. So if you’re looking for an amazing 4.7 star rated crate that is nearly indestructible, and you’re willing to pay the price, ProSelect has the perfect crate for you!

#1: Collapsible, Durable Aluminum Dog Crate from Grain Valley 4.9/5 Stars

Grain Valley Durable Aluminum Dog Crate ReviewComing in as our number one, holding the top spot, is this durable and versatile crate by Grain Valley. A quick look will tell you that this crate is very different from its lesser contenders. It comes in three sizes – medium, large, and x-large, and comes in only one color, a desert tan with black. This crate is truly collapsible, able to collapse down in just a few minutes to just about 8 inches thick. It’s even rust resistant with crush proof corners! This is yet another crate that is virtually indestructible, with military grade stainless steel latches and welded with cross bars.

An amazing feature of this crate is it’s airline features. These include airline rail storage slots, spring loaded handles, and it’s even IATA compliant (Air Transport compliant.) The medium size is meant only for dogs up to 50 pounds while the large is meant only for dogs weighing up to 70 and the x-large for dogs up to 100 pounds. Please keep these weight suggestions in mind. It’s truly heavy duty while still managing to be lightweight and fully collapsible, which is exactly why it takes our #1 spot! Even though it only has 15 reviews at this time, it still amazingly holds a 4.9/5 stars – nearly a “perfect score!” It’s quite the investment at its high price, but well worth the indulgence.

Please crate responsibly.

Walcut Heavy Duty Fodable Strong Metal Pet Dog Cage Crate Review

Walcut Heavy Duty Fodable Strong Metal Pet Dog Cage Crate Review

Your 10 month old lab puppy may still be young, but she is getting very big. The biggest problem you have had with her, though, is that she has started jumping up on people as they come in the door. You didn’t think anything was wrong with it before, but now it’s becoming a problem as she gets bigger and stronger. You have started to train her not to jump, but you have quite a ways to go and don’t always have the notice to plan ahead for it. Sometimes, you just have to crate her with some toys while you answer the door, giving your visitor enough time to get in the door and giving your dog time to calm down enough to greet properly. You let her out, she greets the visitor (without jumping) and plays for a few minutes before retreating back to her crate with her favorite bone in tow. You are so glad you invested in such a great crate for your furry friend.

Why Get a (Heavy Duty) Crate?Walcut Heavy Duty Fodable Strong Metal Pet Dog Cage Crate Review

While most people automatically purchase a crate, kennel, or cage for their dog upon rescuing or buying one, many people need some convincing that these crates are more that punishment tools and prisons. When used properly, crates are a great tool for dog loving families. A crate is most often used as a bed for your dog, whether at night or during their naps. While you may have to train your dog to sleep in their bed (instead of yours) at first, many dogs eventually prefer to sleep in their own bed without any fuss. Another great use for a crate is for housebreaking. Travel, training and retraining for behavioral problems (such as chewing items other than toys, aggressiveness, pottying in the house, etc), and even to keep your pup safe while you are away and it’s too cold out for them to be in the yard are all great uses for crates.

Another reason to get specifically a heavy duty crate for your dog is money. If you’re researching and comparing heavy duty dog crates, it’s safe to say that your dog has likely eaten or clawed their way through at least one kennel. What does this have to do with money? Well, a heavy duty dog crate is at least a few hundred dollars on the low end. It is very much worth the investment! Instead of buying a $50 crate every 3 months, simply investing (after some research into just the right heavy duty crate for your escape artist) in the right heavy duty crate can end up saving you money in the long run.

One last use, although perhaps not often used, is to introduce new pets (dogs or otherwise) with the safety of the crate. Suppose we are talking about two dogs. You would bring your new dog home (in a crate) and allow your current dog to have the ability to get to know the dog, while having command of his home still. Let the dogs sniff and talk to each other, releasing the new dog and watching closely as the dogs interact and get used to each other. This should, of course, be done with care and close supervision, but this is a wonderful use of a crate as well as the many other reasons.

What Makes the Walcut Heavy Duty Foldable Strong Metal Pet Dog Cage Crate Playpen w/Wheels a Great Choice?

Walcut Heavy Duty Fodable Strong Metal Pet Dog Cage Crate ReviewThis dog crate comes in three sizes: 37”, 42” and 48”. Pets who weigh 176 pounds or less are recommended for this crate (all 3 sizes), although the capacity weight is 330 pounds. The 37” measures at 36.3″ long,  24.2″ wide, and 29.1″ tall.  The 42” measures at 41.7″ long, 29.1″ wide, and 33.5″ tall. The 48” measures at 48.8″ long, 33″ wide, and  37″ tall. The heavy duty steel frame of this crate is strong and durable, with four wheels on the bottom (two of which lock.) The bottom grate as well as the tray beneath it are removable for cleaning, as well. Like many others, it also has two door. One door on the side, and one door on top of the crate (for removing easily those dogs who for whatever reason do not want to come out of their crate.) The front door features two separate latches, as well. This crate, unlike some others very similar to it, does actually fold easily for storage or to take along on trips. Reading through the reviews, the only slight issue (so far) seems to be that the hinges and latches do not always line up where they should. Some customers hammered things into place and some contacted customer support for help with this issue, with good feedback.

Pros:Walcut Heavy Duty Fodable Strong Metal Pet Dog Cage Crate Review

  • Two doors.
  • Folds easily.
  • Wheels, some locking.
  • 4.5 / 5 star review on Amazon.

Cons:

  • 42” and 48” Out of stock currently (until May).
  • Only 15 customer reviews so far.

Conclusion

While it has basically the same features of many similar dog crates on the market, the 4.5 star review on Amazon tells us how great of a product truly is, as does the fact that two of the sizes are out of stock at this time. Time will tell, but from what can be seen now, this is a great, durable dog crate for your furry friend!

Grain Valley Durable Aluminum Dog Crate Review

Grain Valley Durable Aluminum Dog Crate Review

You open the door to let your dog out to use the bathroom one last time before bed, unhappy to see that it has been raining. You’re already not looking forward to bringing him back in. While he is out, you brush your teeth, change into pajamas, and tuck the kids into their beds. You go to the door and let your dog back inside. He waits at the bottom of your bed on the floor while you brush dirt and dog hair out of your spot. You climb into bed, turning off the light. You invite the dog up onto the bed, knowing he would join you in a few seconds regardless. You sign, imagining that your comforter must be covered in wet, muddy paw prints by now. Sound familiar? Many people allow their pets to sleep with them, and that’s fine, unless you’re constantly washing away hair and mud. If you’ve had enough, you may be in the market for a new dog crate.

Why Get a (Heavy Duty) Dog Crate?Grain Valley Durable Aluminum Dog Crate Review

While there are many reasons to buy and use a dog crate in your home, we will focus on two for now. First of all, general crate training. When you get a new dog, whether it is a brand new puppy or an older dog you are giving a new home, crate training can be a big help for many areas. The whole reason for crate training is to help your dog to become familiar and comfortable with their crate. If you just got your dog, unless they came with one, it is likely that they are not used to being in a crate. Even if they have been crate trained, it may take them some time to adjust to a new crate. One of the most useful ways to do this is to use night time for crate training. You fill the crate with the dogs bed, blankets, and maybe even some toys (this will depend on you and your dog – some people do not suggest using toys.) You use a command word such as “kennel”, “pen up” or “bed” to order them into the crate, and then treat them when they enter, closing the door after treating them. Puppies may need to potty at night still, so you may be doing this once or multiples times each night depending on how long your dog can hold it. This crate training, in general, can make it a lot easier to use the crate for all the other ways it’s useful for.

One of those uses is for housebreaking your dog. A lot of this is done at night, like the crate training. For new puppies, they will absolutely need to be housebroken. You may even have to housebreak a new dog who may be a rescue and has lots of anxiety or even a new dog who is just testing their limits. Housebreaking is simple. The crate becomes their home or their bed, and eventually they will not want to go potty in their bed. It stinks to them too. This means, of course, more work for us. When they whine every few hours at night during their first few weeks, yes, you do need to get up with them because no, they really can’t hold it. Half of housebreaking your dog, maybe even more, happens at night. When you let them out, you must immediately take them to their potty spot to potty. Eventually, they will get the idea. And the nighttime “crate” potty training will lead straight into them wanting to use their potty spot, not your home, during the day as well. Crates sure can be useful for your dog, but which is the right one for you?

  • Lightweight when compared to other heavy duty crates.
  • Collapsible.
  • Air Transport compliant.
  • Multiple sizes available.
  • Drain holes for cleaning.
  • 4.9 / 5 star rating on Amazon.

Cons:

  • Expensive ($500-$700 range!)
  • No removable tray for dogs who may have accidents.
  • Only 15 customer reviews, currently.

Conclusion

This crate from Grain Valley is quite a bit different from the others we have looked at. This one would be especially great for those who travel by plane a lot, and take their pets along. It’s got a few special features for that alone. It’s also one of the few that collapses without disassembling the entire crate. It’s amazingly expensive, but if those features speak to your lifestyle, it may be worth the investment for you and your dog.

ProSelect Empire Dog Cage Review

ProSelect Empire Dog Cage

Your 3 year old german shepherd HATES being kenneled, and had chewed through many plastic and wire crates. For months, now, you’ve just been leaving him outside in the year, where he is perfectly happy and well behaved.  It’s going to be winter soon, though, and there will be many times throughout the season where you will have to leave the house during bad weather and you won’t want to leave him out in it. What do you do? You invest in a truly heavy duty crate. They are great for many reasons, which we will talk about, but the main reason is that you need to be sure your dog is not only happy and comfortable in their new crate – but that they are safe (whether that be safe from destroying the house or safe from ripping apart and escaping the new crate.)

Why Get a (Heavy Duty) Crate?

While we will specifically be reviewing and comparing heavy duty dogProSelect Empire Dog Cage crates, there are many dog owners who do not own, but could greatly benefit from having and using dog crates. There are tons of great reasons to purchase and use dog crate, two of them being to help correct and retrain behavioral problem and to have a “safe space” for your dog. Let’s begin with using a crate to correct and retrain behavioral problems. Of course there are good and bad ways to use a crate for training, so let’s look at an example. Let’s say that when you leave the house, your dog tends to chew up things like shoes or pillows. The way you would use a crate to train away from this poor behavior would be to, instead of just letting your dog roam free,  leave your dog in the crate when you leave the house. You would need to supply your dog with great toys or bones for chewing, and to keep him entertained. After a while, whether it be just a few days up to a few months (the timing truly depends on your dog’s temperament and age) you will see a decrease in chewing up items that are not your dog’s toys and bones. Of course, as a part of this training, you should never yell at or lecture a dog while in their crate, which will in turn start to make it seem like their crate is a “bad place.”

Speaking of, another reason to have and use a crate is to give your dog a “safe space.” This is a place your dog knows belongs to them, is always there, has their familiar toys, pillows, blankets, etc. This is part of the reason you should never yell at them or lecture them while they are in their crate. This is their little hideaway when they’re anxious, nervous, or just want to nap somewhere they are comfortable. So there are two of the many reasons you should have and use a dog crate – now which ones are best?

What Makes the ProSelect Empire Dog Cage a Great Choice?

ProSelect Empire Dog CageLet’s take a look at the Empire Dog Cage from ProSelect. There are two sizes, medium and large. The inside dimensions of the medium cage are 35 ¾” long, 23½” wide, and 24½” tall. The inside dimensions of the large crate are 40 3/4″ long, 28 1/8″W wide, and  31 ¾” tall. The descriptions mentions that these crates are “quite possibly the world’s strongest dog cages.” They were designed specifically for dogs who usually claw and chew their way through their cages and crates. These crates are created with strong steel tubing and extra heavy duty welding was used at the “stress points” of the crates. It was specifically created with 20 gauge steel and reinforced with ½ diameter steel tubing for extra heavy duty strength.

Because of the heaviness of this crate (75.2 pounds) this crate comes with 4 wheels (which can be removed if desired.) Two of the wheels are locking wheels. It even happens to be rust resistant. One difference from most heavy duty crates is that this one only has one door, on the side, unlike some that also have one door on the top. And, like most heavy duty crates, the bottom is barred with a removable tray beneath it. This crate seems it could hold any wild beast! And, amazingly enough, a full 82% of the Amazon review were 5 stars, another 10% of the total reviews were four stars. This is quite incredible, and the total review (at this time) are from just over 500 customers.

Pros:ProSelect Empire Dog Cage

  • An incredible 4.7 / 5 star Amazon rating!
  • Two sizes, medium and large.
  • Very sturdy and durable construction.
  • Wheels are fully removable if desired.
  • Reading through the reviews there were virtually no problems this crate, and any problems were quickly and efficiently handled.

Cons:

  • Only one door, on the side (some other crates will have two.)
  • Very expensive ($300-$600 range depending on the size you choose.)
  • There doesn’t seem to be a warranty of any kind.

Conclusion

From researching, reading reviews, and going over the product specifications, this seems to be the supreme doggy stronghold you may be looking for. It is very expensive, but you may be better off spending hundreds of dollars one one crate that will last forever rather than many $50 or $100 on each replacement crate over the years. The only thing it seems to be missing from the other crates is a door on the top, but the difference in quality may just overpower that for many.

Sliverylake Heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate Review

Sliverylake Heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate

Your eight month old lab puppy can be a terror when he really wants to be – which usually only happens when you leave him home alone. You have even tried gating him into the kitchen, the mudroom, and other rooms but he somehow always manages to have the gate knocked over, pillows, shoes, toilet paper ending up chewed up and strewn across the house. You can’t even be mad, he’s so cute and just wants to play. But you’re tired of coming home to these huge messes and replacing your husband’s favorite shoes. So, you’ve recently decided, you are going to have to get your puppy a dog crate. There are thousands of them out there, though, and you are going to need some help deciding which one is best for your family and your pup.

Why Get a (Heavy Duty) Dog Crate?

Let’s just focus on two reasons right now that you should really considerSliverylake Heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate getting a dog crate. Travel and helping to fix and retrain behavioral problems. Let’s begin with why a crate is great for travel. If you have a high energy dog (think  Jack Russell) you may be taking a road trip and not appreciate your dog jumping all over the kids, the seats, and even you while driving so they can get a better view of the very exciting world passing them by as you drive. Or you may have a new puppy who gets car sick or simply can’t “hold it” for long, and you have them trained enough that they won’t potty in their kennel. You may even just have a dog who truly loves their crate and it makes them feel better and more secure to travel in their crate, even if it’s not necessary. There are many great reason to use your dog crate to travel.

Another great reason for having and using a dog crate is to help during training or even retraining of behavioral problems. Don’t mistake this for always being a punishment tool – it can be a great training tool when used correctly. For example, you may currently be training your dog not to jump on visitors when they come inside your home. Someone knocks on the door, and maybe you’re not prepared to do your usual training with them (you’re missing one of your training tools or maybe it’s a child or elderly person you don’t want to test your training out on.) For this example, a great use of the kennel for training would be to crate your dog with a favorite toy or stuffed bone, then let your company in. Depending how far into your training your dog is, you may even be able to let your dog out after a few minutes (when your dog has had enough time to calm down) when you’re sure the dog will no longer jump on your company but will greet them calmly instead. This is just one way to effectively use a crate in training behavioral problems. So, a crate is a great idea, but which ones are best?

What Makes the Sliverylake heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate Kennel with Tray a Great Choice?

Sliverylake Heavy Duty Dog Cage CrateFirst of all, there are four different colors – black, golden, silver, and bronze – to match any home decor. If you really don’t care about the color, though, there are many other great features. This specific crate comes in three different sizes, 37”, 42”, and 48”. The 37” crate total sizing is 36.3” in length, 24.2” in width, and 36.3” tall. Some suggested dogs for this size are the collie and rottweiler, among many other dogs. The 42” crate total sizing is 42” in length,  29” in width, and  33” tall, with some dog suggestions being the greyhound and akita. Lastly, the 48” crate total sizing is 48.8″in length, 33” in width, and 37″ tall. This crate specifically says for dogs UNDER 176 pounds.

Let’s talk about the crate itself. It’s made from durable and strong heavy duty steel. Like many others, the bottom of the crate is barred, separated from a section below which holds a tray (for waste.) This tray is made from composite plastic, just remove, clean, and replace. This crate also, like many others, had two doors. One door is on the side and one on top, the website stating that one “is equipped with a lock” and the other is a sliding bolt latch. It does not tell you which one of which door, or what this other “lock” is.

This crate also comes on four wheels, with two of them having the ability to lock, keeping the crate in place without accidental moving. Lastly, there were so many great and satisfied review of dog owners on Amazon whose dogs used to rip and tear through wire and plastic kennels and whose dogs also had done very well in this crate, not being able to tear into the bars.

Pros:Sliverylake Heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate

  • 3 different sizes.
  • Breed suggestions online for each size.
  • Top as well as side door.
  • Removable tray for cleaning waste.
  • Multiple color options.
  • 4.3 / 5 stars on Amazon.

Cons:

  • Doesn’t just “fold up” to move places or store, you must disassemble it.
  • Heavy, the shipping weight is nearly 86 pounds. With the crate itself being 76.7 pounds total.
  • Website description of the locks were vague.
  • Only 17 reviews on Amazon so far.

Conclusion

Having less than 20 reviews on Amazon right now may be a blessing and a curse. It’s got a great rating from the 17 people who reviewed it, BUT that also means there may be (or may not be) issues with this crate that can really only be seen by looking at a bigger selection of users. Otherwise, this crate looks great overall. The descriptions on Amazon regarding the two different locks, as well as whether the removable tray was plastic or steel, were a little confusing but if you don’t mind that you should be fine. It’s a heavy duty crate with the usual features of most other heavy duty crate and good reviews. It seems you can’t go wrong with this heavy duty crate from Sliverylake!

SmithBuilt Heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate Review

SmithBuilt Heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate

You finally gave in to your children’s begging and pleading, and you come home with a new furry family member. You just came home from the pet store where you purchased many new puppy items including a collar, leash, toys, puppy food, bowls, and more than likely a dog crate. A dog crate is one of the most basic puppy or dog items. Most dog owners either used to have them when their dogs were still puppies who eventually grew out of them and no longer use them, or have had a dog crate since day one with their furry canine family member. Let’s take a look into a few great reasons why people do and should have a dog crate for their dogs.

Why Get a (Heavy Duty) Dog Crate?

We are going to specifically discuss heavy duty dog crates. Heavy dutySmithBuilt Heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate crates are built much sturdier and last longer than a $20 plastic kennel you may find. With some dogs, you may find it necessary to have a heavy duty crate simply because your dog is more rowdy, aggressive, or simply tough on their dog items. So, then, let’s discuss a few reasons why you should have a dog crate in your home: housebreaking and travel.

First up – housebreaking. A big part of housebreaking for pets is to learn that they don’t want to soil “their home.” But you have to start small, with their dog crate. You must make sure (with blankets, toys, or other items that your dog is comfortable or familiar with) that your dog comes to see their crate as their safe place. This could take only a few days to a few weeks depending on the age, temperament, and type of training you choose to do with your dog. Every time your dog is in the crate for an extended period of time, and you let him out, you immediately take him to the place where he is allowed to potty ( this may be straight outside to the yard or even just to a potty pad inside the house – this really depends how you choose to train.) They will eventually learn, likely with a few accidents along the way, not to potty in their “home” or “safe space.” Of course this leads into a much easier housebreaking training outside of the crate, but the crate is a safe, easy, and familiar way to train brand new puppies or even just new to your home dogs where they can potty.

Then we have travel. If you’re like many pet owners, you love to take your dogs with you when you travel – whether it be a three hour car ride to visit family or a plane ride across the country for summer vacation. A dog crate can be a great asset on these trips. You may have a new puppy that is unsteady in a car, gets car sick, or can’t hold it long enough. You may have high strung dogs who simply need to be contained. Regardless of your reason why, for new puppies or older dogs, a crate can be so helpful. It may not be permanently needed, but it is a great training tool at first for many to learn how to travel.

What Makes the SmithBuild Heavy Duty Dog Cage Crate Kennel a Great Choice?

SmithBuilt Heavy Duty Dog Cage CrateThis dog crate from SmithBuilt is a great option. It comes in multiple colors as well as sizes – 36” 42”, and 48”. The 36” is a total of 36” in length, 24” in depth, and 29” tall. The 42” is a total of 42” in length, 30” in depth, and 34” tall. #5 Omega Paw Self-Cleaning Litter Box – 3.7 Stars

Omega Paw Self cleaning Litter Box

Coming in at number 5 is the Omega Paw Self Cleaning Litter Box. This is truly as basic as you can get without being a litter box that you have to scoop cat waste yourself. So basic, it doesn’t even use electricity. This is the only self cleaning litter box in our list that requires human interaction to clean waste. You roll the litter box to its right side, then return it. The waste enters a drawer that the owner pulls out and throws away. While some may not see this as “self cleaning”, the simple fact is that it take away getting on your hands and knees to manually scoop all the waste away yourself. Just roll and toss. Simple, easy to understand, but just barely a step above having a regular litter box. The good part is, it runs at such a low price, about $100 less than any other litter box on the list.

#4 Our Pet’s SmartScoop Automatic Litter Box – 3.8 Stars

Our Pet's SmartScoop Automatic Cat Litter Box

Coming in at number 4 is the Our Pet’s SmartScoop Automatic Litter Box. This is the type of litter people generally think about when you say “self cleaning litter box.” It uses a simple rake system to clean your pet’s waste away, storing it in a No Touch waste bag to be removed about once a week (for homes with only one cat, more often for more cats.) There are no fancy features, and you can use normal cat litter as long as it is clumping litter. Because you are still using litter, you will probably be buying it just about as often as you were before, unlike some other systems here which you replace the litter like substances much less often, if ever. #3 PetSafe ScoopFree Self Cleaning Litter Box – 3.8 Stars

PetSafe ScoopFree Self Cleaning Litter Box

Next up in line is the PetSafe ScoopFree Self Cleaning Litter Box. A step above #2, this “litter” box uses Premium Blue Crystals instead of cat litter. These crystals work to absorb liquid waste and dehydrate solid waste. Also a rake system, this box automatically activates 20 minutes after your cat leaves the litter box, giving the crystals time to take care of the waste. The tray containing the crystals is a disposable tray, which you only have to replace every few weeks (about once a month for most one cat homes.) You slide it out, cover it with the cover from the replacement tray, toss it and slide the replacement tray in. Easy, quick, and you only have to do it about once a month! Another fun feature is that the replacement tray not only come in the original scent, but in lilac scent as well. Very similar to our litter box at #2, with a few different useful features.

#2 CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box – 3.9 Stars

CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box Review

Taking the number 2 spot is the Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box from CatGenie. This litter box is so drastically different than any of the other 4 litter boxes on this list. Like #3, this litter box also uses not litter, but a litter-like substance. It uses special washable granules. The cleaning system is also entirely different than the other litter boxes in out list, as well. First of all, there are 3 different timer settings you can use – four times a day, every time it is activated by your cat, or manually when you press a button. Once the cleaning starts, the crystals liquify solid waste, to make sure they can safely go through the toilet or drain. Then, using water and a special SaniSolution (approved by veterinarians!) the granules are washed and sanitized. Lastly, a heater dries out the granules. Your cat’s litter box is now freshly washed, sanitized, and probably in better shape than your own bathroom.

Now, because this system clearly uses water, that means that you need a water hook up. The company suggests placing the litter box in either the laundry room or in a bathroom. You need not only an electrical outlet, like in the #4 and #3 litter boxes, but you will also need a cold water hookup. They include everything you need to hook everything up, and plenty of clear instructions as well as plenty of helpful videos and extra instructions online to help you out if you get stuck in the set up. This litter box system is also for a maximum of 3 cats, although they suggest it for only 1 to 2 cats.

The most amazing part of this system is that never, not once, should you ever have to touch or replace the granules. One or two Amazon reviews mentioned losing quite a bit of the granules during the washing process and having to get some replacement granules, but the general idea is to never have to replace them. And don’t worry, the granules biodegrade after 9 month so they’re totally septic system safe, just in case you do in face lose some granules during the washing process. Plus, the SaniSolution cartridge only needs to be replaced about 3 months for one cat and two months for two cats.

If you are a total clean-freak about your own bathrooms, this is the perfect and sanitary option for your furry feline companion. You will never have to touch, smell, or even change their waste or “litter” ever again.

#1 Litter Robot III Open-Air – Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box – 4.3 Stars

Litter Robot III Open Air Self-Cleaning Litter Box

Taking the cake at number 1 is the Litter Robot III. Even more advanced than the flushable and washable litter box in number 2, this litter box has all kinds of bells and whistles that helps it take the top spot. Like some of the others in this list, the cleaning process begins once your cat leaves the box. For this litter box, that timer can actually be set for either a 3, 7 or 15 minute delay. To clean, the globe rotates around, separating the clumped waste from the litter and dropping the waste into a carbon filtered drawer. All you need is any clumping litter and garbage bags for this system.

Some of the features include a drawer full indicator, an automatic night light, as well as a backup battery and control panel lock out. You will never have to use the guess and check method to decide when your system needs emptied, the drawer full indicator will light up and stay lit until you change the bag out. The automatic night light is also a great feature, especially if you have older cats. It’s a low light the lights up the litter chamber as your cat enters. There’s also no need to worry about having to manually clean the system during a power outage, because there is a 48 hour backup battery! The system will continue it’s normal cleaning for a full 48 hours without power. The last of many great features is the control panel lock out. No chance for any pets or kids to play with the buttons and change your system settings. Simply lock anyone but yourself out to make sure your system stays the way you want it. With all these features, the Litter Robot III rightfully took the top place on our like of the top 5 Amazon self cleaning litter boxes.

So get ahead of the game and take control with an automatic self cleaning litter box.

Why Get a Self Cleaning Litter Box?

The two biggest things that we try not to waste in life are time and money. We are all about creating more of both and using both in the best ways possible. Are you spending your time and money wisely when it comes to your cat’s litter box? Probably not if you are still in the “dark ages” of litter boxes, manually scooping the waste away daily. You are wasting your time each day scooping waste, tossing it, then refilling and cleaning up cat litter. There are so many better ways to use your time. List 5 things in your mind, right now, that you could do in 2 minutes. Now, how many of those items sound like a better time investment than cleaning out your cat’s litter box? Probably all 5 of them. So get ahead of the game and invest in an automatic self cleaning litter box, and take more time to do the things that matter most to you.

Speaking of investing, many people start to consider switching to self cleaning litter boxes but are put off by the upfront cost as well as all the options and features. For many it just seems like too much money and work, when in fact it’s just the opposite. The initial cost of an automatic self cleaning litter box can really be anywhere from $30 to $450. Many of these are in the $100-$300 range, scaring away possible buyers with just the price tag alone. Don’t  be afraid of the cost, because in the long run you are actually going to be saving money. Less cleaning of the litter box means less litter, which means spending less money. And that’s just for the ones that use litter. Many use other litter like options that need only to be changed as often as once a month, once a week, or even not at all! Before too long, your investment into an automatic self cleaning cat litter box will pay off, and you will be a happy cat owner.

Omega Paw Self cleaning Litter Box

What makes the Omega Paw Self Cleaning Litter Box a Great Choice?

Unlike some other self cleaning litter boxes, the Omega Paw Self cleaning Litter Box does not require any electricity, liners, filters, or special litter. Let’s first discuss how this can possibly be a “self cleaning” litter box without using any electricity. Most self cleaning litter boxes require electricity so that they can automatically clean themselves with no human interaction. This litter box is a little different. To clean away the waste, you just (manually) grab the litter box and roll it all the way onto its right side and then back again. The waste is is separated through a grate on the inside and deposited into a scoop that you pull out and dump. So, this litter box is more self cleaning in the sense that you do not have to manually scoop the cat waste from the litter itself. Unlike other self cleaning litter boxes, though, this particular one does actually require human interaction in order to clean itself at all. You must be able to roll the litter box back and forth in a controlled manner, as to not dump waste and litter everywhere.

Many will not actually see this as a self cleaning litter box. It does not automatically remove waste without human interaction. You have to remove and throw away the waste manually just as often as you would a normal litter box to keep away odors. On the other hand, at about $30, many see this as a great alternative to the expensive (over $100) automatic self cleaning litter boxes. There was actually some confusion in the comment and question sections of this Amazon product as to how this could be labeled as a self cleaning litter box. Surprisingly, many replies were quite happy with the product, saying that for the price it was well worth it, since they were not wanting to spend hundreds of dollars on the “truly” automatic self cleaning litter boxes. So, in our list of five this may be the most unusual and simple self cleaning litter box. Regardless, it had a high rating and great reviews on Amazon, so the product must be doing something right! You simply have to look at the phrase “self cleaning” in a different light.

Omega Paw Self cleaning Litter Box

Pros:

  • No electricity needed.
  • You can use your own cat litter (clumping is suggested but not necessary).
  • Extremely simple to use.
  • Price is extremely low.
  • Light – not too heavy for an elderly person to roll and dump.

Cons:

  • You must manually roll the entire litter box then remove and throw away the waste.
  • You can’t leave this box alone for weeks or months – it will need to be cleaned every day or every few days.

Conclusion

While this may be the most controversial self cleaning litter box in our list of 5, it still has amazing reviews, requires litter setup and no special instructions. If you are in search of a litter box that you don’t have to scoop but don’t want to fork over hundreds of dollars, this is the perfect litter box, or maybe even stepping stone, for you. Give it a try – you will be impressed at its simplicity.

Our Pet’s SmartScoop Automatic Cat Litter Box Review

Our Pet's SmartScoop Automatic Cat Litter Box

For your daughter’s 12th birthday, all she wanted was a cat. She had been asking for years, and you finally decided she was old enough to take on the responsibility. You made it clear that she would have to make sure the cat had food, water, and a clean litter box. She hastily agreed, of course, promising that she would take care of it. After a few weeks, though, it’s clear that you are going to have to take over cleaning the litter box. Your daughter either forgets, has school and activities, or doesn’t actually clean it as often as it really needs cleaned. And let’s be honest, your child doesn’t notice that the dishes need done daily, why would she notice that the litter box needs cleaned daily as well?

You’re tired of your house smelling of cat urine, but you really don’t want to be the one taking over the scooping. Sound familiar? Having your children care for “their” animals can, may times, be more work than caring for them yourself. Take a little bit of the workload off, and consider investing in a self cleaning litter box that will make cleaning much simpler for you and your family.

Why Get a Self Cleaning Litter Box?

While there are many reasons to invest in an automatic self cleaning litter box, let’s just focus on two of them. First, let’s talk about the dust and ammonia issues. Many people have had problems, while cleaning their litter boxes, with the dust that flies around during cleaning as well as the strong odor of ammonia that results from cat urine, whether as they clean or when the litter box does not get cleaned often enough. The ammonia itself has actually been known to cause respiratory issues. For people with health issues, allergies, and those who are sick, cleaning the cat’s litter box can actually be more damaging to their health. This is a huge reason why some choose to switch over to a self cleaning litter box.

Secondly, let’s talk about money. “But self cleaning litter boxes are so expensive!” Well, this would be a correct statement, at first. Starting off, the cost of an automatic self cleaning cat litter box is usually much more, as much as hundreds of dollars more, than when you start off with a regular litter box and a bag of cat litter. Over time, though, you will see that your investment has truly paid off. You will generally spend much less on cat litter, as many self cleaning litter boxes even use other materials like crystals, granules, and other types of “litter” material that doesn’t even need replaced. And when you’re only disposing of a bag or box of concealed waste every week to a month, and the odors are totally gone, you will see that your investment did in fact pay off in more ways than one.

Once that times is up, a rake moves from one end towards the other, raking away the clumped waste into a tray that conceals the waste and odor. The rake now moves back to the original position, and the cleaning is over. Very simple and straightforward. The waste, when raked away, is deposited into No-Touch Waste Bags, which are recommended to remove, toss, and replace about once a week, and the activated carbon filter once a month in a one cat home. For more cats, the recommend more than once a week, of course. You can also use your own cat litter, so long as it is clumping litter. There is no need to use special crystals, granules, or litter other than making sure the litter clumps.

  • You have to remove the bags as often as a week or less, as opposed to some that can go a month or more without needing any manual attention.

The amount will differ, of course, depending on the type of litter, crystals, or granules your automatic litter box may take and how often it needs to be replaced.

What Makes the CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box a Great Choice?

Just by looking at the name, you can tell that this specific “litter box” is very different that the other automatic litter CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box Reviewboxes you may have researched and considered. This innovative “litter box” is really not a litter box at all, not only cleaning away waste but washing itself as well. It uses washable granules along with a SaniSolution cartridge in place of cat litter. Let’s discuss the washables granules first. The granules are litter-like, and they’re permanent. You will NEVER have to change out the granules. NEVER. The granules are also dust free and safe for septic systems (any granules that might accidentally get washed away with the water will biodegrade in 9 months.)

Let’s move on to the fact that this litter box washes, sanitizes, and dries itself. What? Crazy, but totally true. When the box starts a cleaning session, it will first remove and liquify and solid waste from the granules (to safely be flushed out with the liquid waste and washing water.) Next, using the SaniSolution that was previously mentioned along with water, the granules are washed and sanitized. Interestingly, the SaniSolution is even veterinarian approved. Lastly, a dryer will heat the granules, drying them. After each cleaning cycle your cat’s “litter” box is clean, fresh, dry and ready for another use. Because it uses water to clean and remove waste, obviously it will need to be hooked up to water. The system needs to be hooked up to a cold water line (think with the toilet or washing machine) as well as a 120 volt electric outlet. Keep this in mine, as this means your placement of this cat box in your home is pretty much limited to a bathroom or your laundry room.

This cat box can also be programmed to run at different times. You can program it to automatically run 4 times daily, automatically upon activation by your cat, or manually when you press a button. The estimated length of the supplies that will need to be replaced (the SaniSolution only) is approximately 3 months for one cat and approximately 2 months for 2 cats. The cartridge containing the SaniSolution is not only biodegradable but also recyclable.

Pros:CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box Review

  • Washes, sanitizes, and dries the granules automatically, waste is fully removed without ever touching a bag or replacement box.
  • Multiple programming options.
  • “Litter”, or granules in this case, NEVER need to be replaced.
  • Parts that do get replaced are biodegradable and recyclable.
  • Veterinarian approved washing solution.

Cons:

  • Expensive, but it’s about in the middle of automatic, self cleaning litter boxes.
  • Can only place where a water line and electric outlet are present.
  • More complicated setup than most litter boxes.
  • No more than 3 cats should use this, 1 to 2 cats is preferred.
  • Possibility for granules to be flushed, increasing the chance that you will, in fact, have to purchase replacement granules.
  • Possibility for clogged pipes and lines.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a truly clean, sanitary, and economically thoughtful cat box, the CatGenie Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box may be for you. While the possibility of issues with this product, the fact is that on Amazon, this cat box has a 3.9 stars out of 5, with 64% of those reviews being 4 or 5 star reviews. If you have a literal house full of cats, though, this may be an issue as it is suggested to have one of these cat boxes for, at maximum, every 3 cats. Keep in mind, too, that you must have a cold water hook up near an electrical outlet as well for each one of these cat boxes you plan to install in your home. For a normal feline friendly home, though, this may just be the perfect sanitary cat box for your furry feline.
